Germany vs Paraguay Highlights: Paraguay Stun Germany in Historic World Cup Penalty Shootout

Match Review Report: Germany 1 - 1 Paraguay (3 - 4 Penalty Shootout)

Paraguay executed one of the greatest defensive masterclasses in modern tournament history, holding four-time champions Germany to a 1-1 stalemate across 120 minutes before dumping them out 4-3 in a sudden-death penalty shootout. This historic victory at Boston Stadium marks Germany's first-ever loss in a World Cup penalty shootout.

First-Half: Paraguayan Grit and the Enciso Opener

As expected, Germany completely dominated possession from the opening whistle, circulating the ball between Joshua Kimmich, Florian Wirtz, and Jamal Musiala. At one stage, the Germans held a staggering 83% of the ball. However, Gustavo Alfaro’s deep defensive block left Die Mannschaft looking completely devoid of a clinical cutting edge.

Against the absolute run of play, Paraguay struck in the 42nd minute. Following a recycled corner from Miguel Almirón, Matías Galarza delivered a pinpoint cross into the box. Julio Enciso rose majestically to power a downward header past Manuel Neuer, recording Paraguay's first-ever goal in a World Cup knockout stage.

Second-Half & Extra Time: Havertz Responds, VAR Intervention

Germany emerged from the interval with renewed urgency. Their pressure paid off swiftly in the 54th minute when Kai Havertz glanced a beautifully weighted cross from Florian Wirtz past Paraguayan goalkeeper Orlando Gill to level the score at 1-1.

Despite a relentless onslaught from Julian Nagelsmann’s side, La Albirroja dug in deep. Germany thought they had snatched a dramatic late winner in extra time when Jonathan Tah bundled the ball over the line from a corner. However, following a crucial VAR review, the goal was disallowed after Waldemar Anton was judged to have fouled Gill in the build-up.

Penalty Shootout Drama

Entering their first-ever World Cup shootout, Germany's legendary spot-kick efficiency deserted them. Orlando Gill instantly set the tone by denying Kai Havertz's opening strike. Nick Woltemade also failed to convert his effort for the Germans.

While Paraguay missed opportunities of their own to wrap up the tie via Antonio Sanabria and Fabián Balbuena, Germany’s final undoing came in the sixth round when Jonathan Tah blazed his effort over the crossbar. Defender José Canale stepped up with nerves of steel, sending Manuel Neuer the wrong way to secure a historic ticket to the Round of 16.

Paraguay will now head to Philadelphia on Saturday, July 4, to face the winner of the clash between France and Sweden.
